International Vedanta Society (IVS) was established at Guwahati, Assam in the year 1989. The Society was then registered under the Societies Registration Act. The Society practices Vedanta, which is the most ancient oriental philosophy popularly known as the Upanishads. The Society teaches how to elevate one’s life making one a true human being. The dream of Swami Vivekananda was to permeate the knowledge of Vedanta from the woods and inculcate it into the lives of the common people. IVS has adopted this dream of Swamiji and is working strenuously to fulfil it with flying colours.
The Society aims to teach the principles of Vedanta in a simple and lucid way to make it intelligible for the people.
Being a true spiritual organization in nature, the Society (IVS) teaches everyone without any discrimination of caste, community, sex, religion or faith. People belonging from various faiths and origins unite to learn and realize the immortal teachings of Vedanta in IVS.
Aims, Objectives & Activities of International Vedanta Society
The primary aim of the Society (IVS) is to preach Vedanta to all, create harmony and achieve equilibrium in the society. The Indian culture under the influence of Vedanta has always been open to all thoughts and faiths, allowing every culture to prosper. IVS is trying to implement these values in the society and for the society.
“Atmano Mokkshartha Jagaddhitaya Cha,” meaning salvation of the Self and well being of the universe is the motto of IVS. With this inspiration, to educate people through Vedanta, the Society organises classes in all its centres and different places. Seminars are also organised with the same view.
Along with these activities, the Society (IVS) has also dedicated itself into various welfare activities. Such as, free medical camps, providing study materials and also one time scholarship to the needy students. Medical assistance to the needy is also provided by the Society. Time to time clothes, blankets and other amenities are distributed to the downtrodden people of the society. The members of the organization do organise many welfare activities for the rural villages, especially for the children. Our welfare activities benefit the tribal and rural villages and help them to thrive.

International Vedanta Society (IVS), held a Press Meet on 19th July 2018 at Kolkata Press Club. Swami Prajnanananda (Vice President), Swami Sankarananda (General Secretary), Tejomoyee Maa (General Secretary, Female Wing), Swami Nirgunananda (Treasurer) and Swami Achyutananda Maharaj of International Vedanta Society attended the Press Meet. Stress is the most critical problem that the society is dealing with so they reflected upon the effective measures of Stress Management.
Stress is a major concern in our society. Due to stress all the dreaded diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and many other physical problems occur. Longer period of stress can also lead to psychological and social issues.
To cope with this situation, the speakers from International Vedanta Society explained that a scientific approach and understanding of life is necessary. The most ancient wisdom of India, Vedanta comes in handy to understand life. The knowledge of Vedanta helps to sort out the daily problems that we face. In our modern society we emphasise more upon our desires than our needs. Vedanta helps us to regulate ourselves on this dangerous trend and encourages us to live a happy, energetic and meaningful life.
All the centres of International Vedanta Society teach Vedanta aiming for a healthy and meaningful life. The centres are frequented by people from different walks of the society. Nobody is barred from spiritual practice and people, irrespective of religion, caste, sex and creed, are allowed to accentuate the positives in their lives.
International Vedanta Society emphasises upon the practice of meditation and feels its need to be mandatory. Proper techniques of meditation do help to solve many problems such as stress, strain, depression, frustration etc.
A regular practice of meditation, attending the classes of Vedanta, at least once a week is very much beneficial to reduce the level of stress. Proper practice increases our levels of productivity and efficiency.
To be a proper human being one needs a balance between one’s intelligence, emotional and spiritual quest. Majority in our society is only concerned with fulfilling the quest for intelligence. Avoiding the rest naturally disturbs the equilibrium and people become prone to diseases, stress and incapable of leading a happy life.
To make it easier to understand, intelligence quest can be narrated as the skill to understand a subject and the ability to master it. The emotional quest is having an understanding about emotional strength and weakness which, if properly controlled, can help us to manage every situation. Finally the spiritual quest is to understand one’s self and its true value to make life meaningful. Without spiritual quest one cannot have proper satisfaction in life and cannot make life worthy enough.
International Vedanta Society is helping to create a balance within the three which can make life more fruitful. For the past 30 years, IVS has successfully brought drastic and remarkable changes in the lives of many. The activities of this organisation have also attracted people from different corners of the world. The members of this organisation now enjoy a fulfilled and stress free life due to the teachings of Vedanta and proper guidance on spiritual practice.
Every evening in all centres of the Society people flock to practice meditation and learn about Vedanta. To attend these sessions one does not need to be a member of the Society.
A healthy lifestyle comprises of daily practice of meditation, at least for 15 minutes, physical exercise and practicing Vedanta which is the answer of our spiritual quest. Practicing this we can make ourselves more and more productive in our life.
Women’s empowerment is a pressing need of the society. IVS is working for the emancipation and upliftment of women. This organisation has launched a ‘self-strengthening’ movement through the teachings of Vedanta. Vedanta helps to connect with the inner divinity and tap into the source of all strength which lies dormant within us. Unveiling this can help us to realise our innate potentiality and make us realise that weakness is nothing but a figment of our imagination. This society has enabled lots of women to live a free, independent life void of weakness and become ‘self- reliant and true’.
The two hour press meet successfully ended with the conclusive essence of Vedanta, its guaranteed effect and practical implementation which can present mankind with the blissful taste of a content life.
