Two men accused of gangraping an eight-year-old girl in Mandsaur, located in northwestern Madhya Pradesh, have been sentenced to death less then two months after their arrest.
Irfan (alias Bhaiyu), 20, and Asif, 24, raped the victim on June 26. They abducted the victim when she was standing outside her school, waiting for her parents. They left her for dead after raping her.
They were arrested within 48 hours.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters, rapists were "a burden on the earth" and that they didn't deserve to live. Thousands took to the streets to protest in Mandsaur.
Details of the attack drew immediate comparison with the infamous December 16, 2012 Nirbhaya case, when a medical student was gangraped in a Delhi bus and brutally attacked. She later succumbed to her injuries.
In July, a special investigation team from the Madhya Pradesh police filed a charge sheet against the Irfan and Asif.
The police said the charge sheet contained 100 documents and statements from 92 witnesses, including doctors.
The victim identified the two accused in court on July 31.
