DEVASTATING FLOOD IN KERALA


As Kerala is grappling with worst floods of the century, the IMD has not issued Red Alert for Saturday. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state to take stock the flood situation. He along with CM Pinarayi Vijayan conducted an aerial survey and announced an interim relief of Rs 500 crore. However, Kerala government had demanded Rs 2000 crore immediate assistance. PM Modi also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh per person to the next kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured from the PM’s National Relief Fund. According to government records, more than 300 people have lost their lives and more than 6 lakh people are living in shelter camps.
Moreover, several state governments have come forward to help Kerala, assistance in cash and kind have been provided. The UAE has also offered help. The Indian Army, Navy, Airforce, as well as NDRF and state forces, have been engaged in rescue efforts and relief materials are provided to the people who are yet to be rescued. CM Pinarayi Vijayan has appealed to people to donate to the state. Thousands of volunteers from across the country are working hard to manage the supply chain of essentials for the people of the state.
