How could a man kill and consume his own mother, isn’t it? How could a leader of the party that worshiped cow since decades slaughter and eat a cow? How could anyone even think of Atal Bihari Vajpayee doing this, even in their wildest dream?
But the Congress party had hatched a conspiracy, when Sonia Gandhi was the party president, to project the then Prime Minister of India Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee as anti-Hindu and consumed cow.
In 2003, the members of a youth wing of the Congress Party had held banners in Himanchal Pradesh that read “Gai hamaari mata hai, Atal Bihari khata hai” (The cow is our mother, but Atal Bihari eats her)” and these banners were displayed in rallies.
Yes, the Congress party indeed said that RSS and BJP stalwart and a hard core nationalist Atal Ji ate beef. But Atal ji who was known for his calm composure couldn’t take it. He lashed out at the Congress party and said
- I have seen posters, pamphlets saying that Vajpayee eats beef. This is absolutely false and baseless. If the Youth Congress had not indulged in this slander campaign, I would not have brought up the issue. I prefer to die rather than eat beef. If the Congress does not stop this false propaganda at once, it could incite violence across the country. Raising of provocative issues will be a hurdle for democracy and is not going to strengthen it. I have an experience of over fifty years in public life, but nobody has ever hit me below the belt. The Congress has gone too far this time.
The then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was so angry that he angrily said “I prefer to die rather than eat beef”. He was a man who followed what he had preached.
Atal Ji in a rally in Himanchal Pradesh even told the people to ask the then Congress chief Sonia Gandhi whether or not he did so? “I am contesting elections since 1952, but never did I throw mud?” he asked.
He continued his scathing attack on Sonia Gandhi saying “I had written to Sonia to stop such malicious propaganda? But I received no reply. If she comes to Himachal, please ask her?”
Later the Congress party realized the blunder it committed. That’s when the Congress party came up with a spin saying “after cross-checking at every level, it was found that none of the party’s office-bearers, leaders or functionaries had ever made such comments”.
