Few days back, the Pune police arrested 5 activists from various parts of the country after they were found to have links with Maoists and naxals who were working against the National interest.
The Pune police along with ATS Maharashtra had conducted raids in many parts of India, from where they arrested many people who were linked with Bhima koregaon violence of January 2018. The police seized scathing evidence which showed that these people had not just orchestrated the violence in Bhima Koregaon but had also planned for the assassination of Prime Minister Modi just the way Rajiv Gandhi was killed.
The activists included Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha who belonged to ‘Elgaar Parishad. But immediately after their arrest, the so called liberals came in support of these urban naxals and claimed that they were being arrested for criticizing the government and the freedom of speech was being curbed. Senior advocate Anand Grover, Ashwini Kumar and advocate Prashant Bhushan had also alleged that the entire case was cooked up and adequate safeguards should be provided to protect the liberty of the five activists.
A plea was filed by Romila Thapar, economists Prabhat Patnaik and Devaki Jain, sociology professor Satish Deshpande and human rights lawyer Maja Daruwala, seeking an independent probe into the arrests and the immediate release of the activists. The Supreme Court which took up the case, had put the arrested activists under house arrest. But the arrested activists sought an independent inquiry by SIT and demanded the release of all 5 of them.
The three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, in a 2:1 verdict, refused the plea seeking the immediate release of the activists. The top court said that they found no fault in investigation of Maharashtra against the activists. It allowed the Maharashtra Police to proceed with investigation against accused activists.Extending the house arrest, the court said that it will continue for another 4 weeks in order to enable the activists take recourse to legal remedies.
The Supreme Court also refused to interfere in the arrest of five rights activists in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case and declined to appoint a SIT for probe into their arrest. The court also said that the arrest made was not due to vengeance and their was sufficient evidence to show that the activists were involved in anti National activities.
Minutes after the verdict was out, former additional solicitor general Indira Jaising mounted a scathing attack on Chief Justice Dipak Misra and said that CJI “dents his own legacy”. The shocking part of these so called liberals is that, only when the court pronounces the verdict in their favour they consider courts are independent, the moment anything goes against them, they show the audacity to question the Judge and the judgement calling them with names.
If this isn’t hypocrisy, then what is?!
