Hinduism in Australia has grown nearly 6 folds in Australia since the 1991 census. During the 1991 census Hindus were 0.3 % but now it has grown up to 1.9 % and the total number of Hindus is 440,300. During the 2011 census, Hindus numbered to 275000 and amounted to 1.3% population of Australia. Hinduism is also one of the most youthful religions in Australia, with 34% and 66% of Hindus being under the age of 14 and 34 respectively.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in a press release said that 30.1% in Australia belong to “No religion” . Atheism, agnosticism, deism, scepticism, free thought, secular humanism or general secularism are increasing in Australia. Post-war Australia has become a higly secularised country. Religion does not play a major role in the lives of much of the population.
In the 2016 census, 29.6% of Australians (or 6,933,708 people) described themselves as having “no religion” . This was more than seven percent higher (and 2,240,546 more) than in the 2011 census.
52.1 % in Australia are Catholics. It is also surprising to hear that majority of people between the age group of 18-34 years didn’t have any religion. Men usually said that they didn’t have any religion.
The total population of Australia is 245,70,122 and one person is born after every 83 seconds. The immigration from South Asia to Australia has immensely increased from 2006.
Hinduism is the oldest living religion in the world and has a population of 1.1 billion people. It is the third largest religion in the world.
An analysis of Department of Immigration and Border Protection reveals that 54.6 % migrants from India have a bachelor’s degree or higher level of qualification. This ratio is three times higher than the national average of Australia which was noted at 17.2 per cent in the 2011 census.
Hinduism is expected to continue to be the fastest-growing religion in Australia. Hinduism had emerged in the 2011 Census as the fastest-growing religion in Australia and is expected to have continued in the years since.
