Election date rescheduled
The State Election Commission agreed to the state's proposal of conducting Panchayat election in a single phase. 14th of May has been finalised for the election and the result will be declared on 17th May. After several arguments the state election commission and the state government concluded with the election procedure will end up before Ramzaan. Earlier the election was to be connected in 3 phases but due to some legal disputes a new election schedule has been made as per the High Court's order.
Although both, the state government as well as as the state's election commission wanted the election procedure to end before the Ramzaan. But the election commission wanted to conduct the vote in two phases fearing of security concerns. As election will be conducted at 58 booths in the state and estimating the total number of armed forces, will it be able to provide protection at every booths!
After conduction of meetings several times with the Panchayat department's OSD Sourav Das the election commission then also found no solution to this security issue. Then the state government proposed of conducting election on a single day in the entire state and assured of taking care the security issue by the state.Armed forces will be allotted in all sensitive areas. Security can be ensured without the help of central forces. If needed, forces from other states can be asked for. If necessary, Kolkata Police will also be utilized.
After receiving the full assurance of the security issue, the commission declared that on May 14, Panchayat votes will be held in Bengal and on May 17 result will be declared.
