Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana, which aims to provide LPG connection to more than 5 crore households, more than 64 lakh women have already received it. The scheme is under the aegis of Ministry of Natural Gas and Petroleum. PM Ujjwala Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in Ballia (Uttar Pradesh) on 1 May 2016 and aims to provide LPG connection to 5 crore households by 2019. Government of India has earmarked Rs. 8000 crore for the scheme.
The eligible beneficiaries under the PM Ujjwala scheme to receive free LPG connection are identified by Socio-Economic Caste Status (SECS) data 2011.
As per Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, more than 64 lakh households have received LPG connection in less than 5 months of the launch. The highest number of beneficiaries under this scheme are from Uttar Pradesh. Among 64 lakh recipients of the LPG connection, about 25 lakh are from Uttar Pradesh, 10.5 lakh from Rajasthan, 7.5 lakh from Madhya Pradesh and 6.5 lakh are from Bihar. As per a report, the states that are doing fairly well include Gujarat, West Bengal, Odisha, Haryana and Chhattisgarh. However, the scheme has failed to gain momentum in some states such as Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.
Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs. 1600 per LPG cylinder is given to poor women. They are also eligible for EMI facility to buy stove and refilling of cylinder. PM Modi has always reiterated the need for eliminating chulha and providing smokeless LPG connection to all the households. The damage caused by smoke from chulha is equivalent to smoking 400 cigarettes per day, and it severely damages the eyes and lungs of poor women. Apart from immense health benefit to the poor families, it also ensures safety and cleanliness to environment.Last year, Prime Minister Modi requested people who are capable of paying full price to give up their subsidy (#GiveItUp). On his call, more than 1.2 crore people have given up their subsidies on LPG which is helping the government to save Rs. 1800 per year. During the launch of PM Ujjwala Yojana, PM Modi had thanked all those who gave up their subsidies and requested the crowd to thank the citizens who gave up their subsidies, which helped the government to provide Rs. 8000 crore for LPG connection to 5 crore poor families.
