Bus carrying university staff plunges into gorge in Raigad, killing 33


At least 33 persons died after a bus carrying around 34 persons fell into a valley in Ambenali Ghat in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Saturday afternoon. Confirming the death toll, District Collector Vijay Suryawanshi said, “33 of 34 passengers in a bus killed after it fell into a gorge near Poladpur in Raigad district today.”
As per police, 34 staff members of Dapoli Agricultural University had left for a picnic to Mahabaleshwar on Saturday morning and had crossed hardly 15 kilometres on the Mahabaleshwar – Poladpur road when the bus skidded off the road near Ambenali ghat before falling into a deep gorge.
Sandeep Patil, Superintendent of Police of Satara district, said, “The bus was carrying around 35 persons. Our teams from the local police station are on the spot. NDRF teams have been called in. Local trekkers are also on the job.”According to primary information, the incident came to light after one of the staffers called some people he knew after getting out of the bus alive. Police officials said that the valley is 300 feet deep.

Taking to Twitter, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Pained to know about the loss of lives in the Mahabaleshwar bus accident. The administration is taking all efforts to provide required assistance. Senior officials and emergency management systems in place. My thoughts are with families who lost loved ones and prayers for speedy recovery of injured.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi also offered their condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives.
