After the announcement was made by the Congress Party, that Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it had to wait for a big shocker ahead.
In a major setback for the Congress president and the Gandhi Dynasty Shehzada, Rahul Gandhi, The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Somnath Sinha Roy opposes Congress’ decision to choose Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the General Elections of 2019.
What TMC believes is that the coalition should keep some ‘space open’ to have discussions about the selection of the candidates. And the Congress alone cannot go ahead and decide on this matter.
“Mamata Banerjee, Chandrababu Naidu, Sharad Pawar all the leaders have equal qualifications. Now if Congress gets the majority in the coalition they will definitely ask for the PM candidature for Rahul Gandhi but I guess we should still keep some space open to have discussion and debate over this,” he said
In response to a media query on who will be the prime ministerial face for the general elections, at a press conference following the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Naturally, the Congress president would be the only face to be projected. The Congress would fight this election by putting forward our leader.”
On Alliance, Surjewala said, “We expect to better our performance of 2004. People will decide. Once the Congress party becomes the single largest party, touching the same magic figure of 200 or more, naturally the Congress party will be leading, and whoever else wants to come and walk hand in hand (are welcome).”
According to the opinion of TMC Party, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has never been a Chief Minister of any state and thus he has no experience of ruling, and handling people under him. Except for the Congress Party alone, no other party has agreed upon Rahul Gandhi being the Prime Ministerial Candidate!! Though they pertain a similar hatred against PM Narendra Modi.
According to Indian Express reports, the WB CM Mamta Banerjee, who shares a cordial equation with former Congress boss Sonia Gandhi, has not even congratulated Rahul Gandhi since his elevation!! Banerjee is one of the strongest local leaders in the country, who has been repeatedly opposing PM Modi and his stronghold team for its schemes and decisions for the nation. PM Modi’s concern and anger against the atrocities of TMC rule in West Bengal, has been received negatively by the West Bengal CM.
TMC sources said the CM has prior commitments for the first three weeks of February. Thus, not only can she be a part of the strategy meeting during the first half of the Budget session, she is also unlikely to go for UPA chairperson’s dinner during the session. Recently, Banerjee had lashed out at Modi calling him a ‘bizzare man’. She had also accused Modi government of asking companies not to invest in West Bengal.
“The Congress was wrong to move the impeachment notice against CJI Dipak Misra. The Congress wanted us to support it. But we did not,” Ms Banerjee had gone on record as saying during her Delhi visit. Making it clear that she was not willing to come under the Congress’ umbrella, Ms Banerjee had pitched for a 1:1 formula, which in electoral terms would mean one winnable candidate versus another in each parliamentary constituency across the country. The United Front or the Grand Alliance would put up one common candidate, which the rest would support. If this particular formula is followed, the Congress’ role in electoral politics will be marginalized in many states.
All in all, the Congress’ and Sonia Gandhi hope of projecting party president Rahul Gandhi as the Opposition’s prime ministerial “face” has hit its first hurdle with supporters of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee launching a soft campaign to project her as the Opposition candidate for Prime Minister in the 2019 general election.
