Ritabrata Banerjee in the Rajya Sabha for release of water by DVC

Bibhash Lodh: Intervention of Ritabrata Banerjee in the Rajya Sabha on 2nd August 2018 regarding the release of water by DVC without consulting the Bangla Government.

Damodar Valley Corporation is releasing excess water every year resulting in severe floods in the state of Bangla.

There is an urgent need to reform the DVC, which releases water from its different barrages leading to the flood-like situation in our rain-battered state. DVC barrages are quite old. They are not cleaned or dredged from time to time which has resulted in sedimentation.  If dredging had been done, then another two lakh cusec of water could have been stored there. So whenever it is raining in Jharkhand, it is Bangla which is suffering every year.

The Honorable Chief Minister of Bangla has been raising the issue of water release by DVC time and again. But no action has been taken. If dredging was done at Farakka then Bihar would not have faced any problem. No proper dredging is done in Ganga and the Kolkata Port

Releasing of additional waters are causing the floods.

The DVC does business in Bangla but it is causing floods by not holding water to its capacity in the dams on a regular basis.

Last year DVC released up to 2 lakh cusec of water, causing floods in more than 106 of our blocks. This is happening because the DVC dams have failed to hold water up to their capacity because of lack of dredging and modernization.
The state government is not consulted before releasing the additional water and this is creating a huge problem for our state. The DVC needs to sit with the state Government on an immediate basis.

No water must be released without prior consultation with the state government. Man-made flood must not cause sufferings to the people of our state and needs to be checked immediately.

Lastly the state government needs to be taken on board in this matter on an immediate basis.
