If you think that the “Gandhi Dynasty” was the invention of Jawaharlal Nehru, then you are wrong. The formation of Gandhi dynasty was well planned even before India got Independence from the British. The letters written to Mahatma Gandhiji 90 years ago proves how Jawaharlal Nehru’s father Motilal Nehru lobbied to make his son Nehru the chief of the Indian National Congress party.
On July 1928, Motilal Nehru had written a letter to Mahatma Gandhi urging to make his son Jawaharlal Nehru the Congress chief. In the month of December the same year, Motilal was elected as the Congress president during the Calcutta session. And in the year 1929, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the party president at the Lahore Congress
What does the letters written to Gandhiji by Motilal Nehru reveal? How Mahatma Gandiji responded to it?
In a letter written on June 19, 1928 by Mahatma Gandhiji to Motilal from Sabarmati Ashram, says “Sen Gupta writes to me saying that I should move the Gujarat Provincial Congress Committee to vote for you (Motilal) as the president of the coming Congress. Perhaps it is not yet time for Jawahar to occupy the throne. And if the Committee that you are managing brings up something substantial it would be as well for you to wear the crown. Sen Gupta suggests Malviyaji as an alternative”.
When Gandhiji said that Nehru can’t be made as the president as he is not fit to the post as of now, Nehru’s father Motilal wrote to Gandhiji once again on 11th June 1928, that read “I am clear that the hero of the hour is Vallabhbhai and the least we can do to appreciate his public services is to offer him the crown. Failing him I think that under all the circumstances Jawahar would be the next best choice”.
Motilal further batted in favour of his son saying “Our race is fast dying out and the struggle will sooner or later have to be continued by men of Jawahar’s type. The sooner they begin the better”.
What does the man who found the letters say?
The letters that suggest that Motilal Nehru laid the foundation to the dynasty was acquired by historian Rizwan Kadri from Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. Kadri said “Motilalji believed that the party should be led by young turks. He writes in this letter how it was time that the more energetic and determined workers should have their own way of guiding the political activities of the country. He further states how there was no reason why people like him and Gandhiji and other senior leaders should continue to force their views on the young of the party”.
The argument made by Motilal Nehru saying Congress party must be led by Nehru as he is young is extremely lame and bizarre. The Congress party had several young leaders who were more eligible and patriotic then Nehru. Using the money power and other means, Jawaharlal Nehru had suppressed several leaders who would have had served the nation honestly then Nehru.
Even after India got Independence, Jawaharlal Nehru became the first PM of India though Sardar Patel had secured highest votes in the internal elections. Today the seed of dynasty that was planted 90 years ago by Motial Nehru has grown up as a giant tree. Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and now Rahul Gandhi, all have enjoyed the fruits of being a part of the Gandhi dynasty.
