Quotas for transgender community in education and jobs : Uttarakhand High Court directs government!

In a very welcome move, the Uttarakhand High court has directed the state government to provide quotas for the transgender community in government jobs and educational institutes. The court has put a six months deadline to implement the order and form a team to work on the same.
The court took up the matter after a petition was filed by two members of the transgender community who had sought protection and liberty for their life. The division bench comprising of Acting Chief Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Manoj Tiwari directed the SSP Manoj Tiwari to provide security to the two transgender petitioners.
The bench instructed the government to also form a board exclusively for transgenders to help the government understand their problems and needs. The high court issued directions to the district administration to ensure registration of all transgenders, and to make sure that no discrimination happens with community members and their children. The court directed the government to have separate toilet for transgender community which is most required.
The court’s decision is indeed a welcome move and needs to be applied in every state and the centre should come up with an action plan to help the transgender community. There are thousands of people who have rendered homeless, jobless in the country for no fault of their own. These transgender community people have proven to be equally capable like any other normal person and have achieved big in their life.
So,they need to be considered humans first and should be given equal opportunity in the country.
