Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the new telecom policy. This new policy has been named the National Digital Communication Policy (NDCP), 2018. It aims to attract investment of $ 100 billion in the sector by 2022 and to create 4 million job opportunities.
Under the policy draft, NDCP focuses on increasing broadband penetration, speeding up the use of modern technologies like 5G and optical fiber at reasonable prices. The draft has proposed to rationalize spectrum charges etc. to revive the burden of debt burden in the telecom sector.
The proposed new telecom policy provides for providing broadband access to 50 megabit per second speed, 5G services and 4 million new jobs by 2022. In this, the provisions of 'Highest Value of Spectrum' have been included to ensure continuous and under-priced access to digital communication. The high value of spectrum and other related charges are the major concerns of the telecom service sector. There is a burden of debt of about Rs 7.8 lakh crore on this sector.
