Police have staged a horrific clash between the two parties in Habiganj demonstrations demanding the release of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. At least 50 people, including 30 activists, were injured. Police detained three people at the time.
The incident took place at city's Shayestanagar on Tuesday noon. The injured were identified as District Juba Dal's general secretary Mia Mohammad. Ilias, District Chhatra Dal president Emdadul Haq Imran, senior vice-president Zillur Rahman, Vice-President of the Jubo Dal, Oliur Rahman, district Juba Dal leader Badsha Siddiqui, Jatiyatabadi leader Mahabir Rahman Shaon, Jubo Dal leader Abul Bashar Isa, Haji Matin and 50 activists were present. The injured were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital and local private hospital.
The detainees are: a municipality staffer Faruq Ahmed and a passerby named Kajal Mia of Majlishpur village, another unknown person.
Local sources said, the police blocked the BNP's demonstrative procession from the party office in Shayestanagar city. At this time, the debate started with the activists. At one point the police started baton charge. Several rounds of rubber bullets and tear cells were thrown to disperse the protesters.
Habiganj district BNP general secretary Mayor GK Gouuch and journalists were injured in over fifty. During the procession, District Detective Police Officer-in-Charge Shah Alam started the crackdown on Mayor GK Gouach.
At that time the activists burst into protest. Additional Superintendent of Police Hetun Nabi attended the meeting. He went to the place and took control of the situation by leaving the mayor GK Gouche.
District BNP General Secretary GK Gouha said that as a part of the central program, the police resorted to a peaceful procession with lathicharges and dragged me in a rude manner.
Habiganj Sadar Police Station OC Yasinul Haque said that 65 rounds of rubber bullets were thrown to bring the situation under control. Present attendance is normal.
