India has become the world's largest rice exporter in the last five years. But the export of rice has declined in this current year because the quality of rice in India is getting worse due to excessive use of pesticides and therefore there has been a decline in export. But now perhaps these conditions may improve.
According to the latest data of the Agriculture and Prasangan Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the export of basmati rice has decreased by seven per cent during the first three months of the current financial year 2018-19. However, Apeda is refusing to accept the statistics of the fall. Director of APEDA A.K. Gupta said that it is not mandatory to do rice testing before India's lab exports, it depends on the company and the exporter.
About 40 lakh tonnes of basmati rice is exported from India whereas the country consumes 2 million tonnes of rice. But due to the use of toxic pesticides, continuous decrease in export is being recorded.
According to the report of All India Rice Exporters Association, every year 50 lakh metric tonnes of rice is exported from India. If rice is not exported due to excessive use of pesticides, then it will have direct impact on 18 to 20 lakh farmers. In view of this, Apeda, the largest government organization for export in India, has issued advisory advising farmers to use less pesticides.
