Power minister R.K. Singh on Monday said that in the first phase of the Energy Conservation Plan 'Performance, Achieve and Trade' (Pat), 86.7 million tonnes of oil equivalent energy was saved which is 30 percent higher than the target is.
The Minister said that more than 400 big industries related to energy intensive sectors under Pat Chakra-I have taken steps to improve energy efficiency in the last three years. This has saved energy of Rs 9,500 crore annually.
Pat Scheme is mandatory for all customers notified by the Energy Efficiency Bureau and is a major program under 'National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency' (NMEEE).
The Pat Scheme is a market based system. Under this energy in energy intensive area is brought down. If the related industry fails to achieve its goal in energy savings, then it can afford to buy energy saving certificates and compensate it. Better performing industries have traded around Rs 100 crore in the form of energy savings certificates with the defaulting customers. Under the scheme, more than 800 customers working in 13 sectors were included. This includes refineries, power distribution companies, railways, petrochemicals and commercial buildings (hotels).
