It was on 6th December 1992, that one of India’s biggest controversy broke out after the demolition of Babri Masjid. The day witnessed the death of hundreds of Karsevaks who brought down the Babri Masjid claiming that it was illegally built over the centuries old Ram Temple by Mughals.
Since then, the country has witnessed many debates, political fights, violence, riots over the issue which at a point of time had the capacity to make or break governments in the country. It became a political issue for various parties who used it time and again in every elections and political fights. It was a well known fact that since 1990, many Hindu organisations and stake holders of the Ayodhya site had demanded the then government to conduct an Archaeological Survey to confirm the existence of Ram Temple which would solve all the issue. However, then government which was controlled by Sonia Gandhi did not allow the ASI to conduct any survey.
But the shocking truth here was, just 15 days before the Babri Masjid could be demolished, it is said that the then PM PV Narsimha Rao had revealed about the Archaeological Survey Report which was conducted sometime during 1970’s.
According to Yogendra Narayan who was serving as the chief secretary in the Uttar Pradesh during the Kalyan Singh government had revealed that just 10-15 days before the Babri Masjid was demolished, the then Prime Minister of India P V Narasimha Rao had called for a meeting with Kalyan Singh on the issue of Ayodhya which was at its peak then. He disclosed that Kalyan Singh went to meet PV Narasimha Rao at his residence and Yogendra Narayan was asked to wait in the car as the meeting was confidential. The meeting was held for over 45 minutes to 1 hour after which Kalyan Singh arrived at the car and while he was sitting, he said that the PM informed him about the report submitted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) that they had found remnants of a temple below the Babri Masjid which belonged to 15th century and the walls of the Babri Masjid were also constructed using the temple. Yogendra Narayan said that Kalyan Singh and himself were shocked to hear the reports from the PM himself. Mr Narayan had asked Kalyan Singh what had he decided to do about this, then Kalyan Singh had said he will hold a discussion with relevant people and will decide on next steps.
The report on Ram temple by ASI was not newly submitted during PV Narasimha Rao government but the report existed since the period of Indira Gandhi. The Archaeological Survey of India had conducted research in Ayodhya many years back during Indira Gandhi’s regime and every Prime Minister after her knew that the Babri Masjid was built by demolishing the Hindu temple. The pillars used for the Babri Masjid all belonged to the Ram Temple which existed in the 15th century. But for nearly 40 years, the entire issues was suppressed by the Congress politicians and paved way for communal clashes which killed hundreds of people.
Now, almost 28 years after the demolition of Babri Masjid, the country still awaits the verdict which has been dragged out of proportion by the Indian courts. It is a shame that judiciary which interferes into every silly problem of Tom, Dick and Harry did not take the Ram Mandir issue seriously which literally shook the country.
Dragging it for this long, the Ram Mandir issue no longer remains just a matter of Babri Masjid demolition but the political parties have made sure the issue gets complicated to the core. Many nameless people claimed to have rights over the land saying it was gifted to them by the Mughals. But DR Subramanian Swamy had filed a petition in which he raised the issue of Fundamental Right of praying in a place. He claimed that Hindus were denied their fundamental right of praying as the Mosque was illegally constructed in the site.
He has also offered a solution saying that since Mosque was not an essential part of Islam, it could be shifted elsewhere and the place of Ayodhya should be given back for the construction of Ram Mandir.
So, the 5 member bench of the Supreme Court tomorrow will decide whether a mosque is essential part of Islam or should the issue be referred to a 7 member bench. But if the verdict gets more delayed, definitely, people will lose hope and patience in judiciary and probably pressurize the government to pass ordinance to build the Ram Mandir.
This issue has had enough debates and discussions and arguments and people expect the courts to show the spine to take the right decision and grant the Fundamental Right of praying to Hindus which has been denied for decades.
