Today, all of a sudden, the Telangana Assembly decided to dissolve the government and called for fresh elections. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao today passed the order to dissolve the Assembly and seek a fresh mandate earlier than the scheduled polls in April 2019. Rao wants elections to be held along with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram in December this year. The Chief Minister met Governor ESL Narasimhan and submitted a resolution adopted in the Cabinet meeting held this afternoon where a decision to dissolve the Assembly and call for early polls was taken.
The big question is why this sudden decision?! It was well known that Telangana CM was losing popularity and wanted an issue to gain sympathy with people. Not to forget that KCR is also in race to the post of Prime Minister along with Chandra Babu Naidu, Mamata Banerjee and Mayawati in the mahaghatbandhan lobby. So, he seems to have utilized the opportunity of going for elections earlier than planned to gain sympathy.
So, now Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha, Chattisgarh and Mizoram will be going to polls in December which is nothing short of a semi-final before the 2019 general elections.
But since the time BJP government came to power, PM Modi is stressing on holding both assembly elections and general elections at the same time in order to cut down cost to the Election commission and also to reduce political gimmicks played by all party in the name of elections. However many parties and especially Congress did not want this module as it would put a full stop to their political gimmicks and corruption during the time of elections.
But recently in a meeting held by Prime Minister with all CM’s of the state, it was conveyed that many party leaders and some Congress leaders were convinced to have both assembly and general elections simultaneously.
But the sudden development by the Telangana government may prop the stage to hold both assembly and general assembly elections together. According to few people in BJP, the top cadre in the party was in a thought to hold earlier elections in the month of December when 5 states go to polls. But however, there was no confirmation as of yet and Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah have been maintaining secrecy with the decision.
If the general elections are to be held in December, the Modi government will definitely have an upper hand as the Congress and the Mahaghatbandhan is still not able to galvanize their support base and are unable to project a united face. However, the core Hindu vote base of the BJP has not been fully satisfied with the Modi government’s talk on issue of Ram Mandhir, Article 35 A and One Nation, One Law. So, if PM Modi dares to hold earlier elections, he definitely have to take a strong stand on Ram Mandhir issue which is being dragged unnecessarily.
The other scenario is that, there is slight possibility of BJP tying up with TRS which may be a body blow to Congress. But at this point of point, it is only speculation and nothing can be guessed with the Modi-Shah strategy.
