The Centre may rule out way to allow private companies to use Aadhaar for authentication

The Supreme Court has termed sections 57 of the Aadhaar Act as unconstitutional, so that private companies, including the bank and telecom service providers, can not use it as the basis for authentication. Although the government is now thinking of some such provision, so that banks and private companies can use the as before.

The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday on the basis of a historic verdict and only a few hours later, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that private companies or institutions will not be able to use the Aadhaar, but it is possible if legal support is available. Jaitley said that he has not yet read the Supreme Court decision in detail. Jaitley, on the basis of private companies' base data, said, "My current answer to private companies is that it needs legal support. We will see what basis they have given. "

The government will now discuss the options between different ministries, which in some areas can use Aadhaar for authentication as before.
