Today,we talk about one such unsual Lord Shiva Shrines in India- Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple, the only temple where Lord Shiva plays Hide & Seek with you.
Widely known as the “Submerging temple” is one of the most unusual Shiva shrines in India.Situated in Kavi Kamboi, Gujarat, this 150 year old Shiva Shrine is flanked by the Arabian Sea on one side and the Bay of Cambay on the other.
According to Kumarika khand in Skand Purana, this Shivling was established by Bhagwan Kartik after he killed Tarkasur. Kartikeya, while worshipping at Kapaleshwar sprinkled holy water on the Shivalinga and prayed so that Tarakasur’s soul rested in peace.He also offered sesame seeds to Lord Kapaleshwar and prayed – ‘May my offerings made in the form of sesame seeds reach Tarak, the descendant of Sage Kashyap.’ This way, Kartikeya was absolved of his sins.
What’s Unusual about this Shiva Shrine..
What makes this temple so unique is, that the temple gets totally submerged into the Sea during the high tide hours and as the tide reduces it again starts emerging out of the sea inch by inch, unveiling the 4 feet high Shiv Ling!! Thus earning the name ‘Disappearing temple of Mahadev’.
It is said that the submerging and resurfacing of the temple from the depth of the sea restores positive energy in the minds of the devotees watching it happen.The sound of the waves crashing on the shore creates a sense of harmony and being close to nature and Lord Shiva.
The visit to the temple should be planned in such a way that, one should get to watch the whole disappearing and the reappearing of the temple. It is ideal to plan a trip for a full day, so that each of the devotee can watch and enter the temple early morning during the low tide hours and can also meditate in the quiet, peaceful surrounding of the temple environment.Another unique feature of the place is the union of the Mahi Sagar and the Sabarmati River.
One can stroll in and around the temple and enjoy the feel of being near the nature and the sound of the sea breaking yet never disturbing the quietness of the breath-taking holiness of the temple. One must watch the temple and the “Shiva Lingam” in its complete glory against the shimmer and darkness of the sea and when the quietness of night engulfs it.
One can also watch the flowers placed on the Shiva Ling at the time of low tide comes afloat on the surface of the sea water at the time of high tide, it lends a spectrum of bright colors to the sea. It is staunch belief that Mother Nature herself performs the ‘Jal Abhishekh’ of the Holy Shrine!! The one who witnesses this happening is felt to be blessed by the divine.
